Operating environment and trends

Approximately 42 million used cars are sold in Europe annually, of which approximately 18% are sold in Kamux's three operating countries. In 2022, according to Kamux's estimate, approximately 0.6 million used cars were sold in Finland, approximately 1.2 million in Sweden and approximately 5.6 million in Germany.

The number of cars sold in Kamux's operating countries declined sharply in 2022, but with the increase in the average price of cars, Kamux estimates that the combined value of the market in Kamux’s three operating countries remained at over EUR 100 billion.

Used car retail trends

Changes in market dynamics

The used car market is still very fragmented. In 2020–2021, several new players focused on online sales of used cars entered Kamux’s target markets, and some of them were forced to adjust their operations during 2022: CarNext ended its operations in Germany and Norway, and Cazoo withdrew from the German and Italian markets.

As the used car trade develops and becomes more specialized, players focusing on a specific part of the car sales value chain (e.g. car deliveries, car processing, purchasing cars from consumers) have emerged. These new players are mainly partners from Kamux’s point of view, but in some cases they are also competitors.

Industry consolidation continued, as internationally operating companies acquired local players in Finland and Austria, among others.

Service in digital channels

The digitalization of retail continues and consumers appreciate an easy shopping experience. The key factors in online service are the reliability of the service and a seamless customer experience between the online store, remote interaction and the showroom. Kamux websites in Finland, Sweden and Germany have app. 1,000,000 visitors per month.

Digital channels and omnichannel customer service are in a key role in each of Kamux’s sales transactions. It is very rare for an entire purchase process to take place in the showroom only. In a typical transaction, the consumer finds a Kamux car online and has a discussion with the salesperson via chat, WhatsApp or phone. After interacting in digital channels, the customer test drives the car and accepts delivery in a Kamux showroom or in their own driveway.

New means of transportation and mobility as a service

Versatile services that enable mobility by car, such as joint ownership and sharing solutions as well as different services with monthly fees, are one of the evolving trends. There are many players in Kamux’s operating countries that offer mobility as a service. Car sharing services have remained quite small and their growth is expected to be moderate (Snapshot of the European car-sharing market, McKinsey). Some players have also closed down operations, especially in the Nordics. Monthly fee-based services, on the other hand, have increased their market share steadily every year. However, the share of monthly fee-based services of the whole car market varies strongly between market areas and in Kamux’s operating countries the majority of car users still choose to finance their car purchases in traditional ways with cash, in installments or with a bank loan. Kamux’s product in the monthly fee segment is called Kamux Huoleton (Kamux Carefree). The service pilot continues in Finland.

Other new mobility services include numerous different business models. Among these, micromobility services based on electric scooters have grown strongly and are partially replacing short trips in densely populated areas traditionally made using public transport, taxi or privately owned cars. Kamux monitors the development of the market. According to Kamux’s estimate, the impact on car demand has so far not been significant.

Electrification of motoring

People have always had a need to move and transport goods. As awareness of environmental and climate matters increases, interest towards cars running on alternative power sources is growing. In addition to environmental considerations, lower costs of use are boosting consumer interest towards electric cars in particular. In addition, the electrification of motoring is promoted in many markets through legislation. Sales of cars running on alternative power sources is still limited by the higher price level compared to traditional combustion engine cars, long lead times, limited selection in some areas, shorter operating range than in combustion engine cars, the developing public charging infrastructure and potential challenges in home charging. Consumer interest towards cars running on alternative power sources is also significantly influenced by the public discussion on the benefits of different power sources as well as development of energy prices.

Of the cars sold by Kamux in 2022, 11 percent were cars running on alternative power sources, which was 21 percent more than in the previous year. Sales of petrol and diesel cars still form the majority of used car sales in all Kamux’s operating countries. The share of plug-in cars is, however, growing rapidly, as new plug-in cars sold today enter the used car market after 1 to 3 years. Kamux is strongly involved in this development and in 2022, it was the largest seller of used fully electric cars in Finland.
